MONTANA AFFILIATE OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE®
AWARDS COMMUNITY GRANTS FOR CRITICAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND TREATMENT EFFORTS
$182,448 in Grants Awarded in Montana to Help Uninsured and Underserved Women
(Helena, MT) The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® raises funds for its mission to end breast cancer forever. Thanks to the generosity of those participating in the Race and other events, the Montana Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® awarded over $188,000 in grants to eight programs across Montana, grants to guarantee access to lifesaving screening.
In order to ensure it is funding programs that address the specific unmet breast cancer needs in Montana, the Komen Montana Affiliate works with local health care professionals and community leaders to conduct a comprehensive community needs assessment. This community profile, a standard practice of all Komen Affiliates, is then used to establish a local grant application and review process consistent with the organization’s standards and mission. “To meet needs we have discovered in Montana, this year’s grant slate specifically addresses assuring women in very rural areas of the state have access to mammograms,” said Katherine Berry, Board member of the Affiliate and Community Profile Coordinator.
The 2011 Komen Montana Community Profile concluded that specific groups within our state are at risk of dying as a result of breast cancer. These include women living in poverty, uninsured women, and American Indian women. The most impoverished counties in Montana are those with the largest urban centers and those with Indian reservations. The largest percent of uninsured residents are in rural counties. Poverty, lack of insurance, and other factors lead to delayed screenings and failure to complete treatment programs. The Profile’s recommendation is to continue Komen support for recruiting women into the Montana Cancer Screening Program and funding for those who do not qualify for the program.
The Komen Montana Affiliate is one of 140 Komen Affiliates worldwide – all pledging to relieve suffering from the disease and to end breast cancer forever. Through local events and activities, the Komen Montana Affiliate mobilizes and educates thousands of community members while raising funds to support community-based breast cancer programs. Additionally, 25 percent of the dollars raised in Montana are invested in promising research.
